El conocimiento geográfico y cultural que Baroja muestra de la región es muy extenso y especialmente detallado en lo que atañe al comercio, las cargas y la pacotilla, la relación con los consignatarios, la constante amenaza de los piratas, etc. Manila provee de arroz, azúcar refinado...y frailes, mientras que en China no se suele cargar mucho más que 'menudencias', en ocasiones viéndose obligado a cargar el barco con piedras de lastre. En una ocasión, en Hong Hong recoge ochenta mil duros de plata que, tras evitar piratas y un motín a bordo, puede entregar en Manila.
