El álbum fue adquirido por Auguste Mouillesaux de Bernières (1848-1917) en 1893, empleado de las Aduanas Imperiales chinasdesde 1867. La leyenda de la contracubierta, 'Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year', hace pensar en un regalo con ocasión de las fiestas navideñas. Sin embargo, Mouillesaux de Bernières, que en 1877 fue nombrado Deputy Commissioner de Fuzhou, fue trasladado a Guangxi  en 1885 mientras que Mencarini llegó a Fuzhou en 1892, por lo que no queda del todo claro donde se habrían conocido.&#13;
&#13;
El álbum fue donado a la  Société de Géographie en 1930 por Marie Bernières-Henraux (1876-1964), hija de Mouillesaux de Bernières nacida en Tianjin.</text>
