<blockquote>Si desea llegar pronto a Shanghai, lo mejor que puede hacer es regresar esta misma noche en el <em>Fook-Chung</em>, de la Compagnie Franco-Chinoise de Navigation pour le Haute Yantzé. De esta manera alcanzará en Ichang el avión del día 10. Si no embarca hoy, seguramente tendrá que esperar cuatro o cinco días, tal vez más.</blockquote>

En su ascenso por el gran río Yangtse, Martorell fotografía rincones y costumbres, como la de sirgar las embarcaciones desde las orillas.<br />
<blockquote>Más adelante, levantábanse en los terrenos areniscos de una lengua de tierra, entre el Yangtzé y un afluente caudaloso, toda una tropa de casuchas de madera. Parecían estar allí inseguras, prontas a volar al soplo de un vendaval, si no galopaban aguas abajo al avasallador empuje de la corriente impetuosa del gigante de los ríos asiáticos. (pag. 65)<br /><br />
<p class="p1">Los remeros echaban pie a tierra, y valiéndose de unas cuerdas, remolcaban lentamente la embarcación, siguiendo a veces senderos, en dirección de la orilla, a varios metros de altura, saltando en otros casos de roca en roca. Eran escenas frecuentes, que traían a mi memoria el recuerdo de los bateleros de la célebre canción rusa. (pag. 76)</p>
