&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;En los últimos años los estudios históricos sobre el papel de los chinos en Filipinas en el cambio de siglo han experimentado cierta popularidad gracias a los trabajos de Digna Apilado, María Dolores Elizalde y, sobre todo, de Richard Chu, editor, entre otros, del volumen&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;More tsinoy than we admit&amp;nbsp;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;(2015), que incide en la importancia de China en la formación de la identidad nacional filipina y el papel de chinos y mestizos en la revolución de 1896.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;Elizalde distingue tres “lecturas de China desde Filipinas” en el siglo XIX: en primer lugar, se refiere a la admiración hacia el Celeste imperio como lugar misterioso y lleno de riquezas exóticas, las&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;chinoseries&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;que habían invadido Europa y América gracias al Galeón de Manila o Nao de la China. En segundo lugar, habla de un “temor difuso” hacia “un mundo extraño y poderoso” que podía poner en peligro la presencia española en las islas. Finalmente está la visión de los misioneros, que consideraban China un lugar enorme lleno de infieles a los que colonizar (Elizalde Pérez-Grueso 102). La curiosidad por ese mundo extraño y poderoso y el auge del costumbrismo llevan a realizar dibujos como los de&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/898"&gt;José Honorato Lozano,&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;que reproducen la idealización de las riquezas chinas, o como la ilustración del&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/991"&gt;chino aguador,&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;que se repite en diferentes publicaciones, asociando a los chinos filipinos con ciertos oficios que solían desarrollar en la colonia española.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;A partir de la década de los 80 del siglo XIX, sin embargo, la visión de los chinos en Filipinas comienza a perfilarse como especialmente negativa, según Richard Chu, debido a influencias que llegan de Occidente y que ven a los chinos como una amenaza a la moral y al tejido social de su sociedad (75). En 1886 se abrió un debate en la prensa filipina en español sobre la cuestión de la inmigración china después de que se diera un aumento de más de 60.000 chinos en 10 años (Jordana y Morera 3). Los detractores de esta inmigración eran los periódicos&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;&amp;nbsp;Boletín de avisos&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;,&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;Diario de Manila&amp;nbsp;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;y&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;La Oceanía española&amp;nbsp;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;(Jordana y Morera 1). El último periódico incluso publicó un volumen especial compilando los artículos que había dedicado a la detracción de la presencia china y que observamos en la colección (&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/989"&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;Los chinos en Filipinas&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;Los chinos empiezan a ser concebidos como una plaga y su prosperidad económica como una rémora para la industria y el comercio españoles en Filipinas. El poema de&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/1052"&gt;José María Rincón&amp;nbsp;&lt;/a&gt;satirizando una conversación con un chino es signo de estos tiempos de demonización y menosprecio por los chinos en Filipinas. Esta situación llevó a crear impuestos especiales para los comerciantes chinos y medidas en su detrimento. La reacción a las mismas es caricaturizada por Ignacio del Villar en la revista&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;Asuang&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;, como vemos en la ilustración titulada “&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/988"&gt;la cuestión palpitante&lt;/a&gt;”.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;En sentido contrario, por parte de los propios filipinos, y no de los españoles desplazados al archipiélago, desde finales del siglo XIX se produjo en Filipinas una identificación con el gigante asiático que comenzó a percibirse como un lugar “cercano”, produciendo textos que resistían el discurso antiasiático de los invasores. La exploración de la identidad nacional filipina que llevan a cabo estos ilustrados en un contexto globalizado, los lleva a buscar un “sistema de representación cultural” (Hall 612), que les permita insertar su nación en una región y tradición cultural distinta de la impuesta por el colonialismo e inclusiva de las diferentes realidades presentes en ella. Muestra de ello es el inicio de&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/1010"&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;A la laguna de Bay&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;, de Fernando Canon, un poema expresivo de la identidad filipina que está introducido por un fragmento de un poeta español (Ramón de Campoamor), un escritor filipino (José Rizal) y un escritor chino (Li Hongzhang). Dada la cercanía, China será vista como la “Asia por Antonomasia”, un lugar en el que buscar similitudes históricas y alianzas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;En los últimos años los estudios históricos sobre el papel de los chinos en Filipinas en el cambio de siglo han experimentado cierta popularidad gracias a los trabajos de Digna Apilado, María Dolores Elizalde y, sobre todo, de Richard Chu, editor, entre otros, del volumen&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;More tsinoy than we admit&amp;nbsp;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;(2015), que incide en la importancia de China en la formación de la identidad nacional filipina y el papel de chinos y mestizos en la revolución de 1896.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;Elizalde distingue tres “lecturas de China desde Filipinas” en el siglo XIX: en primer lugar, se refiere a la admiración hacia el Celeste imperio como lugar misterioso y lleno de riquezas exóticas, las&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;chinoseries&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;que habían invadido Europa y América gracias al Galeón de Manila o Nao de la China. En segundo lugar, habla de un “temor difuso” hacia “un mundo extraño y poderoso” que podía poner en peligro la presencia española en las islas. Finalmente está la visión de los misioneros, que consideraban China un lugar enorme lleno de infieles a los que colonizar (Elizalde Pérez-Grueso 102). La curiosidad por ese mundo extraño y poderoso y el auge del costumbrismo llevan a realizar dibujos como los de&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/898"&gt;José Honorato Lozano,&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;que reproducen la idealización de las riquezas chinas, o como la ilustración del&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/991"&gt;chino aguador,&lt;/a&gt;&amp;nbsp;que se repite en diferentes publicaciones, asociando a los chinos filipinos con ciertos oficios que solían desarrollar en la colonia española.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;A partir de la década de los 80 del siglo XIX, sin embargo, la visión de los chinos en Filipinas comienza a perfilarse como especialmente negativa, según Richard Chu, debido a influencias que llegan de Occidente y que ven a los chinos como una amenaza a la moral y al tejido social de su sociedad (75). En 1886 se abrió un debate en la prensa filipina en español sobre la cuestión de la inmigración china después de que se diera un aumento de más de 60.000 chinos en 10 años (Jordana y Morera 3). Los detractores de esta inmigración eran los periódicos&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;&amp;nbsp;Boletín de avisos&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;,&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;Diario de Manila&amp;nbsp;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;y&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;La Oceanía española&amp;nbsp;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;(Jordana y Morera 1). El último periódico incluso publicó un volumen especial compilando los artículos que había dedicado a la detracción de la presencia china y que observamos en la colección (&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/989"&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;Los chinos en Filipinas&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;Los chinos empiezan a ser concebidos como una plaga y su prosperidad económica como una rémora para la industria y el comercio españoles en Filipinas. El poema de&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/1052"&gt;José María Rincón&amp;nbsp;&lt;/a&gt;satirizando una conversación con un chino es signo de estos tiempos de demonización y menosprecio por los chinos en Filipinas. Esta situación llevó a crear impuestos especiales para los comerciantes chinos y medidas en su detrimento. La reacción a las mismas es caricaturizada por Ignacio del Villar en la revista&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;Asuang&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;, como vemos en la ilustración titulada “&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/988"&gt;la cuestión palpitante&lt;/a&gt;”.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;En sentido contrario, por parte de los propios filipinos, y no de los españoles desplazados al archipiélago, desde finales del siglo XIX se produjo en Filipinas una identificación con el gigante asiático que comenzó a percibirse como un lugar “cercano”, produciendo textos que resistían el discurso antiasiático de los invasores. La exploración de la identidad nacional filipina que llevan a cabo estos ilustrados en un contexto globalizado, los lleva a buscar un “sistema de representación cultural” (Hall 612), que les permita insertar su nación en una región y tradición cultural distinta de la impuesta por el colonialismo e inclusiva de las diferentes realidades presentes en ella. Muestra de ello es el inicio de&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/1010"&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;em&gt;A la laguna de Bay&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;, de Fernando Canon, un poema expresivo de la identidad filipina que está introducido por un fragmento de un poeta español (Ramón de Campoamor), un escritor filipino (José Rizal) y un escritor chino (Li Hongzhang). Dada la cercanía, China será vista como la “Asia por Antonomasia”, un lugar en el que buscar similitudes históricas y alianzas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

                <text>En ocasi&amp;oacute;n de la apertura de una nueva sucursal de la sombrerer&amp;iacute;a La Espa&amp;ntilde;a, &lt;em&gt;The China Press&lt;/em&gt; publica una semblanza biogr&amp;aacute;fica de su propietario, Ger&amp;oacute;nimo Candel Rubio (1868-1934), que aparece citado con su nombre anglicizado como George.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Militar destinado en Filipinas (habr&amp;iacute;a luchado en la batalla de Cavite), Candel habr&amp;iacute;a abierto despu&amp;eacute;s un par de teatros en Manila antes de trasladarse a Shanghai donde en primer lugar regent&amp;oacute; una f&amp;aacute;brica de tabacos que, seg&amp;uacute;n el peri&amp;oacute;dico, empleaba 40 filipinos y 800 chinos. M&amp;aacute;s adelante, en 1911, abri&amp;oacute; su primera tienda de sombreros en Szechuan Road y, en 1928, una sucursal en el 44 de Nanking Road, esquina Henan Road y otra en el &lt;a href="http://ace.uoc.edu/items/show/491"&gt;589 de la Avenue Joffre &lt;/a&gt;(actual Huaihai lu).</text>
