La biblioteca Harvard-Yenching de Harvard University alberga un álbum de fotografías de Juan Mencarini obtenidas durante su estancia en la ciudad de Fuzhou (provincia de Fujian) como 3r Asistente de clase A de las Aduanas Imperiales, sirviendo bajo el comisionado del húngaro Edmund Ödön Faragó.
Mencarini llegó a Fuzhou con su familia a finales de 1891. Un año después participaba en la fundación del Fuzhou Camera Club, repitiendo la experiencia de la fundación del China Camera Club en Shanghai en años anteriores. Se trata de las primeras asociaciones de extranjeros amateurs en China. Mencarini remitió algunas de las fotografías incluidas en el álbum a la exposición anual de la Royal Photographic Society en Londres de 1894. Estos datos permiten datar la obtención de las fotografías entre 1892 y 1893.
El álbum, de 21 x 28 cm, está compuesto de 39 fotografías en gelatina sensibilizada de 13 x 19 cm, sobre un fondo de cartulina gris unidas en formato de acordeón. Las imágenes ofrecen un buen recorrido por algunas de las principales vistas de la ciudad de Fuzhou y alrededores, incluyendo el complejo budista de Gushan, las industrias agrícolas y ganaderas de la zona y algunos de los escenarios de la guerra sino-francesa de 1884.
Diversos factores apuntan a que el álbum perteneció o fue un obsequio para Samuel Levis Gracey (1835 – 1911), ministro metodista y cónsul de los Estados Unidos en Fuzhou en dos periodos (1890 – 1893 y 1897 – 1907). Gracey aparece en algunas de las fotografías del álbum, que se cierra, además, con una fotografía del Anglo-Chinese College, institución educativa de cuyo comité directivo formaba parte Gracey.
Según Carrie Kent, quien en los años setenta era bibliotecaria de la biblioteca de Brandeis University (Waltham, Massachusetts), el álbum apareció entre otros muchos libros viejos cuando se tiró al suelo una pared para expandir la biblioteca de ciencias. En 2009, la señora Kent lo donó al bibliotecario de la colección de Asia oriental de la biblioteca Yenching en Harvard University, Raymond Lum.
El hecho de que S.L. Gracey vivió sus últimos años en Newton, Massachusetts, muy cerca de Waltham (donde se halla Brandeis), también apunta a que el álbum habría pertenecido a la familia Gracey, que acaso lo donó a la universidad.

Fotografía Nº. 21 del <em>Foochow album</em> de Juan Mencarini, obtenida por Mencarini durante su servicio el Chinese Maritime Customs Service en Fuzhou.<br /><br />En la imagen, el inicio del camino que conducía al complejo budista de Gushan 鼓山, situado, como indica el pie de foto, en una colina al oeste de la ciudad de Fuzhou, a unos 600 metros de altitud. Gushan era uno de los destinos preferidos entre los extranjeros residentes en la ciudad durante el verano, que encontraban allí un clima más temperado.<br /><br />En primer término se encuentra la Pagoda de la Longevidad (<span>万寿塔), de 3,65 metros de altura y con cuatro relieves de Buda en los lados de la base.</span>
