Botado en 1923, el Blas de Lezo, al mando de Gonzalo de la Puerta y Ramón Navía Osorio como segundo, participó en la defensa de los intereses extranjeros en Shanghai en 1927.
Zarpó de Vigo el 24 de enero de 1927 y llegó a Shanghai el 26 de febrero. Tras fondear en el extremo de la fila de buques extranjeros amarrados en el Huangpu, desembarcó 50 hombres que patrullaron por el Bund y cuyo servicio fue apreciado por la prensa británica de Shanghai. Permaneció en China hasta el 22 de agosto.
